Tails of Recovery
Addicts and the Pets That Love Them

Here's a book that proves pets (meaning "beloved") are not only our comrades, but also our guides, teachers, and, at times, our spiritual enhancers. In this book, recovering addicts share stories of their voyage from chemical dependency and insanity, back to a world of rehabilitation, wellness, and inner harmony. - From the Foreword

LAS VEGAS - Pets have never been more popular. Single people, families, the elderly and youngsters seem drawn to the fun-loving spirits and innate wisdom of animal companions. In fact, most people will tell you that they derive much joy and satisfaction from the human-animal bond. But what about people damaged in serious ways? Can they benefit from that bond as well? Tails of Recovery: Addicts and the Pets that Love Them (Central Recovery Press / April 2009 / Hardcover $19.95) by Nancy A. Schenck, presents poignant stories from recovering addicts about the pets in their lives.

Tails of Recovery is a narrative examination of the disease of addiction, its effects on the pets in addicts' lives before and after recovery, and how pets aid the recovery and healing process. Eleven stories, told by recovering addicts, give life to these amazing relationships. Each story exemplifies a lesson recovering addicts need to learn to deepen their recovery: "Recovery Is...," "Addiction Is...," "Finding a Higher Power," "Making Amends," "Grief and Loss," "Responsibility," "Trust," "Commitment," "Self-Acceptance," "Tolerance," and "Unconditional Love."

Many of these Tails of Recovery go to the heart of the addiction experience. But the lesson for readers to learn here is that animals do not abandon their owners in the face of active addiction - they persevere. And, in so doing, these animals have the ability to inspire their addicted owners to imitate the strength, stoicism, and magnificent bravery that their pets exemplify.

Over the past twenty-five years, professionals have made amazing discoveries about pets, animals, and the treatment of disease. In therapy sessions, pets have been shown to help many people, including recovering addicts, with issues of control, anger, hostility, trust, and self-esteem, while providing the healing power of unconditional love.

Written by a recovering addict in memory of a treasured childhood pet, this book is for animal-lovers, those with addiction, and those who love them. Tails of Recovery provides inspiration, comfort, and hope that recovery is possible even in the most extreme cases.
